Astana Wolves
Team History
A complete year-by-year chronicle of the Astana Wolves — from the first 6-on-6 pickup game in 2013 to two-time national champions.
Grassroots Founding
The Astana Wolves trace their roots to June 10, 2013, when Asset Ainabekov — a Nazarbayev University student — launched a VK community called 'NU American Football Club' and posted an open invitation to a pickup game.
When students returned in September 2013, the community quickly gained momentum — word spread from campus to the wider city. A key figure in that growth was Arman Ali (#75, one of the earliest recruits, who still plays for the Wolves today). Through rugby, Arman knew Denis Kazimirenko — a long-time American football enthusiast who had wanted to start a proper team for years. Arman connected Asset and Denis in autumn 2013. Denis brought structured training discipline from his rugby background and deep knowledge of the game, shifting sessions from casual pickups to organised practices. Before the community's winter break, proper training was already in place.
Building the Team
Over the winter of 2013–14, Asset and Denis planned the transition from an informal community to a structured club. A social media campaign targeting the start of the new season brought in a wave of recruits, and on April 11, 2014, the Astana Wolves were officially launched as a club at Nazarbayev University — the date the team treats as its official birthday. The first official coaches were two former Almaty Titans players: Bakyt Zhazykbekov and Ilyas Abrayev. Denis Kazimirenko served as assistant fitness coach; Asset Ainabekov as team manager. At the time, four active American football teams existed in all of Central Asia; until shortly before the Wolves' formation, there had been only two: the Almaty Titans, based at KIMEP University, and Barsy of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
The team practiced at the Nazarbayev University sports centre, training three times a week for free. About 50 players passed through in the first year, with a core of 30 regulars. Equipment was scarce — players shared borrowed and second-hand pads, rotating in and out during practice. In September 2014, former Almaty Titans players Pavel Filippov and Dimash Adilbekov shipped 3–4 shoulder pads and helmets to Astana — a month before the team's first ever away match. When the Wolves travelled to Almaty in October 2014, the Almaty Titans shared their full team equipment with the Wolves for the game.
Later in 2014, Will Conway joined as volunteer coach. An American from Auburn, Alabama, Conway had been living in Kazakhstan since 2003 and had previously helped establish the Almaty Titans. He became the Wolves' first experienced football mind on the sidelines — bringing crucial knowledge of the game to a team of complete beginners. In late 2014 and early 2015, Conway and Bakai Madybaev of Bishkek Barsy, with assistance from the US Embassy, arranged the Wolves' first bulk shipment of equipment from the United States.
First League Season (CAAFL)
In January 2015, the Wolves met the Almaty Titans for the first time at a Winter Cup event in Astana.
That year the Wolves debuted in the Central Asian American Football League (CAAFL) alongside the Almaty Titans, Bishkek Barsy, and Almaty Eagles (ITU) — their first ever formal league. On 2 May 2015, the Wolves played their first CAAFL home fixture at Zhas-Batyr Stadium in Astana, losing to the Almaty Titans 12–26 (Wolves TDs: RB Amir Davletov and Merey Balgabayev). The Wolves recorded their first ever competitive win that season, beating the Eagles in Almaty. The Wolves also lost their home game against Barsy.
CALAF Season and First Cross-Border Away Game
On 19 June 2016, the Wolves beat Bishkek Barsy 20–9 in Astana (CALAF). By this point, head QB Merey Balgabayev had noted that the Wolves had already played pre-2016 friendlies against Russian sides including the South Ural Scouts and the Chelyabinsk Hornets.
On 20 August 2016, the Wolves and Almaty Titans together travelled to Yekaterinburg, Russia to play the two-time Ural champions Ural Lightning. This was the first cross-border away game for an Astana-based American football team, and a milestone in the Wolves' competitive identity. The 2016 CAAFL season ended with the Wolves finishing second overall — silver behind the Almaty Titans — after beating Eagles and Barsy.
Russian League (LAF) — Ural Division Debut
In May 2017, the Wolves formally joined the Russian League of American Football (LAF) in the Ural Division — the first Kazakhstani team in the Russian league. Their debut on 21 May 2017 in Yekaterinburg ended 45–7 to Ural Lightning. The only Wolves touchdown was scored by WR Aleksey Mikhasyov (#24), with a 2-point conversion by QB Merey Balgabayev — the first Wolves score in the Open Russian Championship. A second game on 10 June in Chelyabinsk against the Tanks ended 6–48.
On 25 June 2017, the Wolves recorded their first LAF victory: Wolves 48–14 South Ural Scouts at Munaytpasov Stadium in Astana. Cornerback Nurbek Kustubayev took two interceptions. The team finished the 2017 LAF season 1 win, 2 losses — 3rd in the Ural Division with a perfect home record. That season the team became known for the chant "Лучший клуб страны — это Волки Астаны" ("The best club in the country — Astana Wolves"), which has since become the team's signature rallying cry.
Second LAF Season — First Win over Ural Lightning
On 19 May 2018, the Wolves beat two-time Ural champions Ural Lightning 14–13 at home — their first ever win over the division's flagship team. QB/coach Merey Balgabayev threw an interception-returned-for-TD but answered with two TD passes. Fakhriddin Farmashev — one of six Almaty Titans players travelling with the Wolves under an informal arrangement — scored the first touchdown and forced a fumble recovery. The visiting Russian side had made a 45-hour round-trip bus journey to Astana.
The Wolves also split their series with Chelyabinsk Tanks (home win 14–11 on 16 June; away loss 12–16 on 2 June). A planned trip to Perm was cancelled for financial reasons, resulting in a technical loss. The campaign closed on 14 July with a 0–41 home shutout by the Steel Tigers.
Siberia and the Seeds of a Kazakhstan League
On 18 May 2019, the Wolves won away at Barsuki (Badgers) in Omsk — 38–8. On 17 August, they beat a combined "Team Siberia" 32–12 in Omsk, with 18 travelling players. An informal "Battle of North and South" inter-city tournament also took place in Talgar, near Almaty — an early precursor to the national championship.
That August, Kuanysh Taskaliyev — the Wolves' club president — published an interview titled "It's already possible to discuss creating a tournament inside Kazakhstan," noting three new teams had emerged in 2019 (Almaty Phoenixes, Orda, and Capitals in Astana). This was the first public articulation from within the Wolves of a national Kazakhstani championship — realised three years later.
Pandemic Year and the Federation is Born
On 12 September 2020, the Wolves beat the Almaty Phoenixes 32–12 — the only publicly recorded Wolves fixture of the pandemic year.
On 21 February 2021, the Federation of American Football and Flag Football of the Republic of Kazakhstan (FAF KZ) was officially registered, operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. This cleared the institutional path for a nationally recognised championship. The same year, an informal "North Cup" tournament was held in Nur-Sultan as a regional precursor to the first official championship.
First Official Kazakhstan Championship — National Champions
In February 2022, Kazakhstan officially joined IFAF. The first official Kazakhstan Championship (ЧРК) was announced: 6 teams in 2 divisions — North (Wolves, Capitals, Nomads in Astana) and South (Phoenixes, Titans, Orda in Almaty). The Wolves opened with a 28–8 win over Nomads on 28 March and a 38–0 shutout on 15 May.
In the regular season: Wolves 41–0 Capitals (20 August); Wolves 29–6 Nomads (16 September). On 8 October 2022, the Wolves met the Almaty Titans in the first-ever ЧРК Final and won 20–12, becoming the inaugural Champions of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Miroslav Parimanchuk was named Defensive MVP of the 2022 season.
Back-to-Back National Champions
The Wolves repeated as Champions of the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2023 — back-to-back national titles. The team's Instagram bio now reads: "Champions of Kazakhstan — 2022, 2023."
On 7 October 2023, the Wolves hosted the UAE Eagles at home — the first foreign American football club ever to visit Astana as a Wolves opponent. The full game was broadcast on YouTube.
International Travel and a Rebuilding Year
In January 2024, the Wolves travelled to Abu Dhabi, UAE for an international friendly — the team's first appearance in the Gulf. On 20 May 2024, FAF KZ President Eldar Makhmutov met the Vice-Minister of Tourism and Sports to discuss inclusion of American football in Kazakhstan's state-supported sports pool and the path toward the 2028 Olympics.
The 2024 ЧРК featured seven teams. The Wolves lost their opener 26–40 to Almaty Phoenix and suffered two defeats to Almaty Horde.
On 30 November 2024, the first national flag football championship was held in Astana — 8 teams. Men's champion: Astana Yetis; Women's champion: Valkyrie Almaty. In December 2024, Georgy Vonchagov — the Wolves' own DB #6, a former USSR national team member — was elected FAF KZ President.
Flag Football Silver — National Championship Finalists
On 15 February 2025, the Wolves' flag football sub-team finished 2nd at the Capital Cup in Astana. Pre-season friendlies against AFC Tigers Karaganda included a 26–12 away win on 13 April.
The 2025 ЧРК opened with the "Derby of the Capital" — Wolves vs Astana Nomad at QSI International School on 11 May. On 7 June, the Wolves played the Almaty Titans in a group-stage game marked as a "10-year rivalry night," commemorating a decade since the teams' first meeting at the January 2015 Winter Cup.
On 28 June 2025, the Wolves reached the ЧРК-2025 Final against Astana Nomad at QSI. Nomad won; the Wolves finished as national runners-up. In December 2025, several Wolves players represented the Kazakhstan national team against Russia.
2026 Season
On 24 January 2026, FAF KZ published its IFAF Allied Member certificate for 2026. On 25 March, Azamat Makhanbetiаrov was appointed FAF KZ First Vice-President.
The 2026 Kazakhstan Championship schedule: 10 May away at Karaganda Tigers; 7 June home vs Astana Nomad; 19 July home vs Lions.
